The Pinup Saints has hands down won the award for most interesting quote ever within the opening two minutes of an interview. Producer Mabel Palomino was describing how the groups songwriter/singer/music producer Raul JR creates the songs they perform, and ended up cracking everyone up.
"Raul and I have known each other for 10 years. We dated for six, almost got married, and then broke up and we are writing partners. Between the both of us we have quite a bit of stories. I am a very proactive person, a bit rebellious, and have a lot of interesting sexual stories. Him knowing my brain inside out he took that and made an album out of it. So the truth about songs like Golden is one time I pissed on Nico and Raul found out about it..."
"...We have to explain that one!!!" interrupted Nico Archambault, winner of So You Think You Can Dance Canada and founding member of the group. "It happened during a show at the Montreal Casino. We were partnered up dancing on the show, and something really funny happened during the show and we both started laughing. We couldn’t stop laughing and she ended up peeing on me onstage. Therefore Golden came out."
"We found it pretty funny. The song is not about golden showers, but there is a line about it in reference to that little anecdote," Palomino continued. "There are some darker moments on the album like Halo (which Nico did a solo to on the show as well as the SYTYCD tour) which is a woman’s point of view of her insecurities towards sexuality and relationships, that whole mind game that we have. We go through a journey of mixed emotions and the album is great."
We caught up with the Pinup Saints – Palomino & Archambault as well as Raul JR, choreographer and singer Wynn Holmes, dancers Laurin Padolina and Anne-Rose Cupidon and Calgary’s own Amy Gardner and Joey Matt (Also top 20 in SYTYCD) as they were in town preparing for their show at Cowboys. They are on a promotional tour for their album Golden which launched April 25th in Montreal. Amy expressed a lot of excitement about being home.
"I would say a lot of really good talent comes from Calgary. I lived in Vancouver for a few years and work in Montreal now and I wouldn’t say Calgary as a city is the most artistic city I have ever lived in but the amount of amazing artists that have come out of it is really extraordinary. Being back in Calgary and doing this, I am nervous but really excited to be here."
"Yeah what she said," added Joey Matt, not the most talkative one of the group.
So what can you expect tonight at Cowboys? A sensual, provocative and unique show that is really beyond description. The group did promise all the guys will be shirtless, and Calgary is in for a treat. What would you expect from a group whose album comes as a thong?
"It is the Pinup Saints way of selling an album. We had a discussion about having the typical plastic jewel case. We were going to do it until a few days before the album launch when Raul said, Mabel you can think better than that," recalled Palomino. "Plastic casing is not sexy, that is not Pinup Saints. I wanted to do something unconventional. ‘Well.. I like thongs… musical thongs...g-string CDs! That’s it!’ We made it happen and that’s our album."
Nico gave us a demonstration while Anne-Rose held it up (sadly, no one would actually put it on for us.)
"Attached to the g-string is a drop card. On that card is an access code. You go to pinupsaints.com and enter the access code and download the album and stuff. It’s not one size fits all! It comes in different sizes."
The Pinup Saint’s show is TONIGHT (Thursday May 7th) at Cowboys Niteclub (1088 Olympic Way SE). Doors open at 8pm, show is at 10pm. Tickets are $10. Golden is available for purchase at the show or on Itunes.
