There is something about a one-person show that is really awe-inspiring. Having no one to work with, and no one else on stage to share the spotlight, can be a lot of pressure. But watching an actor transform before your eyes is truly magical. Much like the previous ATP production The Syringa Tree, ATP's current show I, Claudia leaves you in awe of the talent of its star, Lisa Repo-Martell.

The show is about Claudia, a 12-year-old (going on 13) girl dealing with the pain of her parent’s divorce and father's impending second marriage. The simplistic set, comprised of red curtains pulled back to reveal a school boiler room, is effective. It is to this boiler room that Claudia escapes on Tuesdays, the day after the happiest days of her life, when she gets to spend time with her dad. Tuesdays are the worst day of her life, because it means a whole week until she sees him again.

In addition to the title character, Repo-Martell transforms into Claudia's step-mother-to-be, Leslie, as well as her recently widowed grandfather, and the high school janitor. Each character is represented by easy costume changes and a mask. It is Repo-Martell's masterful capturing of mannerisms and voice that makes the audience feel as if they are seeing an entirely different person on stage.

Both laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreaking, I, Claudia is already in the running for one of the best shows of the new theatre season. Anyone who has ever experienced divorce, heartache, or been an adolescent (which means everyone) will find enjoyment in this show. Go see it. It is a truly great evening of theatre.
