In 2003, a little musical revue called
British Invasion became a smashing success at Stage West. The result included a sequel and future musical reviews including
California Dreaming 1 & 2,
Canadian Explosion and the incredible
One Hit Wonders that ran last year. The musical revue concept has proven to be very popular and successful for the company, and understandably so. Part concert, part theatre experience, each one has been highly entertaining.
So now Stage West has returned to where it all began, with the original. Featuring Canadian Idol Season 3 winner Melissa O'Neil, former Guess Who singer Terry Hatty, long time Stage West favorite Gerrad Everard, and eight other talented performers, it is easy to see how the show launched the revue phenomenon.
The first impression as the cast makes their way onstage for Cliff Richard's
Summer Holiday is 'one of these guys is not like the others.' The cast is made up of young incredibly good looking men and women, and then there is Terry Hatty. With a long white mane of hair flowing down his back and a few decades on his co-stars, he seems to be an outsider at first... and then he sings. The guy has an incredible set of pipes that left the audience in awe. His rendition of
Stairway To Heaven was a show stopper. While he took the music seriously he also showed his comedic side, stumbling around the stage in a dead-on Keith Richards impression for a Rolling Stones set.
The Stones set is another highlight. I didn't see the first run in 2003 but recall people telling me about "this incredible performer who captured Mick Jagger on stage in tight leather pants." That performer was Gerrad Everard and the description was accurate – down to the swagger and movements, he recreates Mick Jagger perfectly.
Other highlights include three Beatles sets, an over the top tribute to Tom Jones, and a Eurythmics set that lets the ladies really show off.
The series of Elton John numbers, leading into Queen's
We Will Rock You &
We Are The Champions, is one of the best sets I have seen to end a show. Absolutely phenomenal!
If you have not yet seen one of Stage West's musical revues...what the heck is wrong with you? We've been raving about them for years in this magazine. Hop on board the double-decker bus and rediscover some forgotten classics, sing along to your favorites and laugh your ass off at some hysterically funny moments (and stuff yourself with great food at the buffet). A great Christmas present and a damn fun evening out!
