HIV Edmonton recently brought Edmonton Singer-Songwriter Chloe Albert to The ARTery this past October 22nd, as part of its Legacy Series.
HIV Edmonton’s Legacy Series is a commemorative of its 25 year history. “HIV Edmonton began in 1984 as the AIDS Network of Edmonton, led by Michael Phair and a group of concerned friends that gathered around his kitchen table to discuss the first public case of AIDS in Edmonton. The AIDS Network of Edmonton was incorporated on February 12th, 1986. In July, 1999 the society changed its name to the HIV Network of Edmonton Society,” states a representative of the organization. “HIV Edmonton plans to honor the work of those champions as we reflect on 25 years of providing support, education and advocacy for those infected with, affected by, or at risk of HIV.”
The Legacy Series is a 15 month campaign, consisting of 7 components. According to Joyce LaBriola, Development and Communication Associate for HIV Edmonton, “The project consists of this concert series, a Distinguished Speaker Series, a coffee table book to be launched on World AIDS Day (December 1st) at a concert by Simon-Marc de Freitas, a Legacy Garden and our Legacy Gala which will be held February 20th, 2011 at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald, with tickets to go on sale on World AIDS Day.”
Chloe Albert, born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, is part of that concert series. She was introduced to music at the age of 5 when an old piano was given to her. Not only did she master the piano, she also became an avid guitar player, which she continues to this day. After numerous open-mic shows, she enrolled in The Grant MacEwan Music Program and showcased her undeniable talent as a vocalist for the Showcase Band.
After winning a grant in 2007 to develop a solo album, her most current album Dedicated State was produced. This release also includes the talents of musicians Sandro Dominelli, John Taylor, Kent Sangster, and Rob Hewes.
In 2008 she was awarded the Canadian Folk Music Award for New Emerging Artist. Her album has charted 3rd on CKUA charts, 1st on Lethbridge’s CKXU, and is regularly played on CBC Radio.
