A
Behanding in Spokane is
Ground Zero Theatre/Hit and Myth Productions third play by Martin McDonagh
after successful runs of The Lieutenant of Inishmore in 2009 and 2007's The
Pillowman. It is obvious that producers Ryan Luhning and Joel Cochrane have
a love of the playwright, it is even mentioned in their notes in the program,
and understandably so.
Set in a seedy hotel room, A
Behanding in Spokane is the story of Carmichael (Cochrane), who 27 years
previously had his hand removed, and to add insult to injury was waved farewell
with his own apendage. He has since searched for his hand, which brings him two
20' somethings scammers named Marilyn (Julie Orton) and Toby (Edward Ogum) who
quickly find themselves in over their heads.
As with McDonagh's previous work, the show has you simultaneously laughing
hysterically and being shocked. Harsh language, violence, and ratching
intensity are blended with comedy in a way that makes it work.
Credit goes to Ryan Luhning, who makes being completely bat-shit crazy as hotel
clerk Mervyn seem effortless. His performance is one of the highlights of the
stellar show. Joel Cochrane's Carmichael is a more subtle madness that balances
out Mervyn's crazy. Ogum and Orton's bickering under stress makes for many very
funny moments while still clearly showing their terror in the situation.
A Behanding in Spokane won't be for everyone with its language and
violence, but those that attended opening night seemed to love every minute of
it. It is one adrenaline fuelled act of damn fine theatre.
