A jukebox musical based on Baz Luhman’s 2001 film; Moulin Rouge is a Tony Award-winning show that has been a top show on Broadway since 2019. The show make’s it’s Alberta debut in Calgary until January 11th before heading north to Edmonton January 13th – 18th.
Moulin Rouge takes place in Paris in the late 1800s. Moulin Rouge is a club owned by Harold Zidler (Bobby Daye), The star of the clubs shows is Satine (Gabriela Carrillo) who attracts the attention of an American songwriter Christian (Ryan Vasquez) and The Duke of Monroth (Andrew Brewer)
The show grabs the audience from the opening chords of the familiar Lady Marmalade and never lets go. The score is remarkable in the variety of songs chosen, ranging from Nat King Cole, David Bowie & The Rolling Stones to Lady Gaga, Sia, and No Doubt. It’s a return to the bombastic musical style and showmanship that was a trademark of 90’s Broadway shows.
The story could falter in the wrong hands. The cast is exceptional. Carrillo is stunningly beautiful, enhanced by incredible costuming and an incredible voice. Vasquez’s Christian immediately charms. He’s handsome but goofy and easy to connect with and has a powerful voice that fills the theatre. Brewer’s Duke is all cold cruelty and simmering violence, until the finale when the mask drops. Seeing him smiling and dancing at the end is a change that is still fun.
From the sexy costumes to beautiful sets, Moulin Rouge is the sort of show that will appeal to most everyone. So, grab your soul sistas and head down for an epic night at the Moulin Rouge.
