Toad of Toad Hall

A Hoppening Good Time

Theatre Review by Jason Clevett (From December 2009 Online)

I was a little unsure when Alberta Theatre Projects announced _Toad of Toad Hall_ as their holiday show. Having become accustomed to shows with exciting swordplay and action sequences, could this Wind In The Willows adaptation capture the imagination in the way that past shows like Peter Pan and Treasure Island had?

There was nothing to fear. With a stellar and talented cast, clever script, and creative improvisation, Toad of Toad Hall delighted both myself, and my 7 year old guest for the evening, equally.

The show is lead by the incomparable Doug McKeag as Mr. Toad. McKeag leaps into the pompous amphibian with gusto in a way that, with any less of an actor, would be unbearably campy - but McKeag is irresistible in the (frogs) legs. From his movement and mannerisms, to even the way he sits, McKeag is genuinely toad-like.

Also notable for his performance is Nick Green in several roles, including Chief Weasel. The night we attended, there were several high school and college drama students in the audience, something Green made note of during the show.

"There must be theatre students here, there is that stench of that blend of poverty and optimism!" he improvised, to a howling response from the audience.

Also fantastic is Ksenia Thurgood who stole many a scene in Stage West's Married Alive earlier this year; she is equally enjoyable as Ratty the water rat. Duval Lang captures the codger of Mr. Badger exceptionally, and Sadie Evan's dimwitted Mole seemed to be especially loved by the kids in the audience. Janelle Cooper, cast in multiple roles, holds her own with the rest of the solid cast.

Toad of Toad Hall is charming, funny and brilliantly cast. If you are looking for a fun evening of family entertainment to get out of the cold, this is a great choice. Adults and children alike will laugh. It is also a great way to encourage children to read – after this sample perhaps they may pick up a copy of Wind in the Willows. I have brought kids to the ATP Holiday Presentation for several years now, which has made lasting memories and will hopefully encourage their love and support of live theatre as adults. I encourage you to do the same, and Toad of Toad Hall is a great way to start.
