Michael Bublé at the 2008 Juno Awards

It is very easy to see why Michael Bublé is capable of selling out arenas all over the world - in the case of Calgary, on two consecutive nights. The Canadian crooner used his talent, wit, and yes, his looks to make the 14,000+ people in attendance become very, very smitten.
A curtain silhouetted Bublé conducting his band, before rising to reveal him. The Saddledome rocked with shrieks at a decibel that likely won't be heard again until Justin Bieber hits town. The man knows how to make an impression, belting out Cry Me A River, punctuated with a burst of pyro. After All of Me and At This Moment, Bublé turned on the charm even further.
“I know all the men are thinking, he's so gay,” the newly engaged singer exclaimed. “If I was, I would be so proudly.” He then went on to compare his fiancé (Argentinian actress Luisana Loreley) to Tiger Woods wife. “He married a Swedish girl,” he said, “Luisana would say, Michael, you cheated on me, I cut off your pepe.”
The mention of his engagement brought a mix of cheers and boos. “That is how her family reacted when I asked,” he said in response. After leaving the crowd in a fit of hysterics he continued singing with Mack The Knife and Everything. He added more humor as he introduced the band, calling one player a “dirty dirty slut,” making the crowd boo by saying “right before we came out he looked at me and said the flames suck.” Furthermore, he convinced the crowd that another band member was a local boy, which resulted in a near standing ovation. “I lied. He's from San Antonio. But you took him into your hearts.”
“That bitch broke my heart,” says Bublé of Jann Arden, with whom he toured a few years ago and dedicated At This Moment. Much like Arden, Bublé deftly manages to mix both of his strongest skills in the show: I would honestly be content to watch the guy crack jokes for 2 hours. Then he sings, and the same applies.
After reacting in mock horror to an 11 year old girl who doesn't like Justin Bieber (“I'm 34 and when he does that little hair flip I melt!”) he talked about his inspirations in music and film. He did an amazing but brief dance, a song of Michael Jackson's (Billie Jean), and got the crowd on their feet to Twist and Shout. “I watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It won the Academy Award for greatest movie of all time. There is a scene where he is in on a parade float singing, I knew I wanted to do that.”
He pulled out the big guns in the latter stages of the main set, walking through the crowd and delivering Home, Save The Last Dance For Me, Heartache Tonight, and I Haven't Met You Yet to singalongs. Returning to his massive stage with Feeling Good and Me and Mrs. Jones, Bublé truly ended the night in spectacular fashion with Song For You. After a trumpet solo from the audience, the lights on the stage revealed just Bublé, standing a good 6 feet away from the microphone, singing acapella. His voice still managed to fill the Saddledome without much amplification, which really showed the power of his croon.
I will confess to developing a bit of a man-crush on Michael Bublé as he cracked jokes and charmed the media at the Juno Awards in Calgary in 2008. It was very evident that I am not alone in liking the guy, but having seen him in concert for the first time, he is truly talented on so many levels. Expect many more sold-out shows from the multi-talented Michael Bublé.
