Hedwig is here! The 1998 rock musical that has become a cult classic much like The Rocky Horror Show will be presented by Sage Theatre February 28th through March 15th.
Starring Geoffrey Ewert and Jamie Konchak, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the story of Hansel, an East German girlyboy who loves rock music and philosophy. Stuck in East Berlin, Hansel meets US Soldier Luther Robinson, who falls for Hansel and the two decide to marry, allowing Hanel to leave Germany. Hansel’s mother Hedwig gives her child her name and passport and finds a doctor to perform a sex change. After a botched operation, Hedwig is left with only a one inch mound of flesh between her legs.
Later, Hedwig forms a rock band dubbed “The Angry Inch”, becoming internationally ignored rock stars. The shows music is influenced by glam-rock like David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lour Reed.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is written by gay author John Cameron Mitchell, who also starred in the show and 2001 film version as Hedwig. Mitchell grew up the son of a US Army Major General in Berlin, and the character of Hedwig was originally inspired by a German Woman who was his family babysitter, moonlighting as a prostitute. The original off Broadway production ran for two years.
Songs from the soundtrack such as The Origin of Love, Sugar Daddy, Wig in a Box and Exquisite Corpse have become staples in many LGBT fans’ music playlists, and the movie has become a part of many DVD collections.
Much like fellow cult favorite The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig will have two special midnight showings - a unique and fun way to see the show.
