In the 1890’s, Robert Dunsmuir, a wealthy coal baron, spared no expense when commissioning his mansion to be built. To this day, it serves as an example of some of the finest architecture and craftsmanship from the Victorian era, featuring beautiful stained glass, carved oak staircases, carved stone fireplaces, and so much more. Unfortunately Mr. Dunsmuir didn’t live to see it, passing away 10 months before it was completed, leaving it in the hands of his sons and widow.
Today it is owned by the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society, and is still in the process of being restored to its former glory. While many of the 39 rooms have been refurnished with 1890-style pieces, several rooms still stand empty as placeholders for future development.
Be sure to climb to the top of the tower and check out what some call the best views in Victoria!
