In entertainment there are those rare things that you instantly connect with. Whether it's a song you've listened to a thousand times, a movie you saw repeatedly in the theatre, or your favourite TV show. Fans follow Broadway musicals and see them multiple times. Some things just reach you in a way that makes you want to see it again and again.
Such is the case with The Daisy Theatre, Ronnie Burkett's hilarious and raunchy puppet show that has returned to the Big Secret Theatre until November 15th. After a sold out run in February, the show has toured to New Zealand and just wrapped up a run in New York City. A recent production marks the 5th time I have visited the Daisy Theatre and it is still just as wonderful as the first time.
You never know what you are going to get in the show. Neither does Burkett who has an idea sketched out but makes up a lot of it during the show. I didn't expect him to appear he said of Jim Bunny, a gay rabbit that popped up. On different nights you may see a witch, a dramatic recreation of Romeo and Juliet, or any of the other 40 puppets that Burkett has painstakingly created.
There are two characters that always appear - Schnitzel a fairy and Edna Rural from Turnip Corners, Alberta. These characters are the heart of the show. Amidst the chaos and comedy that unfolds are what can only be described as moments - when the audience sits silently, feeling what is happening on stage. These are not merely puppets on strings. Burkett has breathed life into them and created real personalities that touch us.
The Daisy Theatre is difficult to review. Even after multiple viewings, it is difficult to accurately put into words what the show is. In part because it changes each night, in part because it's so magical that I want people to just experience it without taking away anything.
Throughout my life I have seen many, many theatre productions on all levels from community theatre to the best shows on Broadway and The West End. Simply put, The Daisy Theatre is one of the best theatrical experiences I have ever had or seen. Period. It is magic on stage. Go see this show.
