Minneapolis made history Tuesday night – electing Andrea Jenkins the firstopenly trans woman ever elected to the city council of a major U.S. city.Victory Fund President & CEO Aisha C. Moodie-Mills released the followingstatement about the win:
"Andrea Jenkins shattered a glass ceiling tonight – becoming the first outtrans woman ever elected to the city council of a major U.S. city. Andrea ranon improving the lives of constituents in her ward, but the significance of hervictory for the trans equality movement is undeniable. Americans are growingincreasingly aware of trans equality and people, and this win will surelyinspire other trans people to run for office and further inclusion in theircommunities."
Victory Fund made Andrea a 2017 spotlight candidate, and raised more than$4,000 for her throughout the election cycle. Andrea was also a VictoryInstitute Empowerment Fellow in 2016 and attended Victory Institute’s four-dayCandidate & Campaign Training – an intensive training to build skills necessaryto run for office or seek other public service positions.
